Why are we doing this?

I have been cooking with my YS640S for ~ 9 years. During that time I became a dealer for Lumber Jack Pellets. I had my business license and it had been working quite well. But then LumberJack required 3 tons a year and a brick and mortar location. My pellets had been costing around $0.67 a pound delivered. I made just enough to pay for my pellets.

Thus began the search for a replacement pellet we could afford in our retirement! I have two PitBoss units, so I did a search on their pellet reviews. Found then to be equal to Traiger, so worth a try!

Then I found out that WalMart would deliver PitBoss Pellets for $15.00 for a 40 pound bag!!! $0.37 per pound!

Now for a thorough test of the pellets. First I need to get all other pellets out of the system.

Empty the Hopper.

Now clean the fire Box and grate.

Fill the Hopper with the PitBoss Pellets.

From appearance, they do not look much different than other pellets.

Prime the fire grate.

First test firing produced very little ash, cooker came up to temp and ran just dandy!

Time for the real test. Prepped a nice young chicken, and loaded her in.

The temperature line is not flat, nor would it be expected to be. We are controlling a live fire inside a pellet cooker.

No issues in the 5 + hours of run time.

Bird Looks and smells awesome. Taste test after dinner

Taste test passed with flying colors. I think we have a “bingo“ on pellet choice.
